The History of SPBC

South Phoenix Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1958 by Rev. W. B. Smith and a dedicated group of members, holding its first services in various locations before securing a permanent building in 1959. Overcoming early struggles, including financial hardships and leadership transitions, the church experienced a revival under the guidance of Rev. Bernard Black, who became pastor in 1965. His leadership sparked tremendous growth, both in membership and infrastructure, with expansions including new classrooms, fellowship spaces, and a scholarship fund. The church became a beacon of spiritual and community support, offering transportation services, youth education programs, and a thriving music ministry. By the late 1990s, South Phoenix Missionary Baptist Church had grown to over 1,800 members and had gained national recognition, hosting key religious events and conventions.

In the 2000s and beyond, the church continued its expansion with the construction of a multi-purpose annex and the development of programs such as “From Boyhood to Manhood” and initiatives to support the homeless. Under Rev. Black’s leadership, South Phoenix Missionary Baptist Church remained deeply involved in the community, even adapting to challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic by shifting to virtual worship.

After Rev. Black’s passing in 2021, a leadership team was established to guide the church through its transition. That team consisted of Rev. Shauncey Hatten, Sr. and Rev. Jerry Center to conduct the operations of the pulpit, and Deacon Charles Fanniel to conduct the operations of the church business. As of 2023, the church remains steadfast in its purpose, embracing new leadership and looking toward the future with its theme: “We are empowered by the spirit; Rooted in the truth; And mobilized for the mission at hand.”
